The first ever UFC event in Liverpool will take place on Sunday, May 27 at Echo Arena
Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson vs Darren 'The Gorilla' Till
UFC FIGHT NIGHT®: THOMPSON vs. TILL – which takes place on Sunday, May 27 will see local breakthrough star Darren Till headline his very first UFC event in front of thousands of home fans at Echo Arena Liverpool.
Never before has the UFC Octagon® landed in Liverpool, May 27 will be a momentous night for the city and two local heroes.
The news was announced by No.7 ranked UFC welterweight Darren Till, one of the sport’s brightest young stars who was born and raised in Liverpool. Till is set to headline this historic card in his hometown and will face the greatest test of his career to date when he goes toe-to-toe, over five rounds, with the welterweight division's No.1 contender Stephen Thompson.
Till will share the spotlight with Molly McCann, who was also born and raised in Liverpool and is set to make her UFC debut on the night. “Meatball” McCann formally holds the Cage Warriors flyweight world title and is one of the most exciting European prospects at 125lbs.
McCann will compete once again at Echo Arena, but on this night she meets Gillian Robertson. 22-year-old Robertson appeared on UFC’s hit 2017 television series The Ultimate Fighter®: A New World Champion, and went on to make her UFC debut in December at the show’s live final, where she submitted Emily Whitmire in the very first round
Following Till’s 2017 victory over UFC veteran Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone – which catapulted him into the top of the UFC’s 170lbs division – fans from across Liverpool have been calling for an event in their home city.
After months of speculation, Till was delighted to share the news: “I can’t believe UFC is finally coming to Liverpool and I’m going to be headlining Echo Arena. My name is going to be remembered in 200 years time for being part of this historical event and I can’t even describe how much that means to me.”
David Shaw, UFC Senior Vice President International and Content said: “The stars really aligned for the Octagon to touch down in Liverpool. We have seen such phenomenal demand from fans in the region for a live event. Pair that with having such a rising, local star in Darren Till it made absolute sense to bring our first live event to this historical combat sports city in 2018.”
UFC has also confirmed two middleweight bouts set to feature on the UFC FIGHT NIGHT® LIVERPOOL card. England’s Tom Breese makes his highly anticipated return to action, stepping up to 185lbs to meet Australia’s Daniel Kelly, while Canadian fan-favourite Elias “The Spartan” Theodorou faces Trevor “Hot Sauce” Smith.
