Liverpool - A Sporting City

Everton FC and Liverpool FC are globally renowned and it is likely that visitors to the city will also know about The Grand National and the region’s three Royal Links golf courses. But that’s not all Liverpool has to offer sports lovers. There are marathons, the Liverpool International Tennis Tournament and water-skiing and sailing in Queen’s Dock too, so why not find out more?

A trip to Liverpool FC’s ground, Anfield, is a must-do for any avid Red, with a tour which allows you to visit the changing rooms, sit in the dugout, visit the Kop and even meet a Liverpool legend. However, it’s also an eye-opening experience for anyone interested in the beautiful game.

Goodison Park is the home of Everton FC, a club which has been a stalwart of English Football since its formation in 1878. With a range of tours available, a visit to ‘the Toffees’ home ground is a fantastic way to learn more about the club’s illustrious history.

The Grand National takes place every April at Aintree Racecourse. It’s not a long race, but it’s a very famous one and for a few heart-stopping minutes each year the world’s eyes are on this breathtaking steeplechase. As well as a full racing calendar, there are also course tours to be enjoyed.

There are three coastal Royal Links golf courses within driving distance of Liverpool – Royal Birkdale in Southport, Royal Liverpool in Hoylake and Royal Lytham and St Anne’s in Lancashire. Each course is internationally famous and has its own claim to fame. Royal Birkdale has been voted the number one golf course in Britain, while Royal Liverpool is the second oldest seaside links course in England and Royal Lytham and St Anne’s hosted the Open Championship in 2012. If golfing is your thing – either playing or spectating – this is the perfect region for you.
